About Nick Carras

From a young age, painting and drawing have always been inherent to my creative self. Growing up in Kalgoorlie, I was inspired by the landscape and brilliant colours of the sunsets together with the juxtaposition of stark shapes revealed. The stilted reflections shown by the dynamic ocean and river of Perth together with the hard-edge lines of cityscapes later fuelled my creativity. Through this combining of worlds I have been developing my own style of art.

I obtained a Diploma of Arts, Art and Design, followed by a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts), Majoring in Painting. The amalgamation of contemporary and classic techniques has formed the basis of my artwork today. The art pieces I create are on square formatted canvas using acrylic paint and acrylic markers. These 2 mediums reflect both my unique painting and graphic design techniques.

Abstract in nature and driven by colour, shape and depth of field, my art explores the way shifting planes interact. Colour theory is an integral element to my art. Throughout all of my art, there is logic within the confusion as positive and negative shapes are contorted into an investigation of space. The layering of colour, shapes and texture create a sense of depth within the picture plane as visual harmony is achieved.

Each artwork feeds the development of the next canvas. Although not figurative, there are certain forms that do display figurative characteristics, but these forms are purely used as fragments in the overall design of my abstract paintings.

The work is often diverse in appearance through the surfaces that emerge. Certain paintings become labour intensive allowing more simplistic designs to eventuate. The dominant elements project forward as I focus on certain artistic aspects of a visually chaotic world.
